The legendary the Mission returns to Budapest.
One of the most influential post-punk and gothic rock bands, The Mission, will return to Budapest on May 9 for a magical evening, bringing their cathartic songs to Hungarian fans once again. The band are also set to release new music next year after a decade-long break, so the set may well include previews of fresh material alongside the classics.
The Mission formed in Leeds in 1986 after Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams left The Sisters of Mercy. They were joined by guitarist Simon Hinkler and drummer Mick Brown, and the resulting line-up quickly established a strong following among fans of post-punk and gothic rock. Their richly layered sound and atmospheric guitar work are paired with Hussey’s emotional, haunting vocals, creating a catalogue of truly anthemic songs.
Their debut album, God’s Own Medicine, was released in the same year the band formed and featured such hits as “Wasteland” and “Severina”, immediately thrusting the group into the spotlight. Its follow-up, Children (1988), produced by Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, further cemented their reputation. Their songs often explore themes of love, loss and existential introspection, earning them a large and devoted fan base over the years.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band enjoyed an especially prolific period. Carved in Sand showcased their increasingly refined sound and included enduring favourites such as “Butterfly on a Wheel” and the live staple “Deliverance”. By the mid-1990s, however, tensions had developed between the band members, leading to their temporary split in 1996.
Despite these challenges, The Mission reunited in the new millennium, released three albums and embarked on several successful tours, proving that they could evolve while remaining true to their roots. Their concerts remain powerful and passionate to this day, and with their rich musical legacy and lasting influence on goth and alternative rock, The Mission remain an important force in music four decades on.
The band have toured extensively since the Covid era and, following several postponements, played two electrifying shows in Hungary in 2023. Now, on May 9, they will return to Budapest, potentially with new material in tow. Tickets go on sale at 11am on September 3 via livenation.hu and funcode.hu.
